NOW IS THE TIME

So, where do we go from here? The workplace seems to be moving in the direction of inclusion and workspaces seem to be changing, what what work is left to do?

Advocacy in the work force and political climate is pertinent to where disability inclusion rights and universal design progress to next. In the most recent election of 2016, candidates like Clinton and Kasich explicitly have stated that they plan to improve disability rights and increase inclusion in the workforce (Ruderman, Jay). In regards to other candidates who have mocked those with disabilities, it is reflective of the time period of change that we are in.

Compared to times where leaders who ran our country hid their disabilities and where having a disability was something that needed to be “corrected,” society is in a more progressive place than it ever has. When you look around, you see wheelchair accessible lifts, disability lifts going into swimming pools, classrooms focused on immersion of students with learning or behavioral disabilities, and therapy targeted towards helping those in need.

However, there is still learning and growing to be done by those in the workforce and patrons of society in order to truly create an accessible environment for the future.

We also face yet another barrier -- advocacy. Where is there to look to help? Where can we go to volunteer our time and speak up for those who can not? Well look no further -- below are a list of sources you can choose from for your voice to emphasize those who have been silenced and  put on the back burner.

Think about it, when you see yourself at your dream job, who is around you? Do you want to work in an environment that reflects the progress we are making in civil rights today? Or do you want to work somewhere where those who do not fit the socially constructed norm are treated differently?

Its our future, and now is the time to change it.
